Expand Your Learning, Meet ASID’s CEU Requirements and Network!
As written in our Winter issue of /Design Community/, National ASID is requiring that all practitioner members – that includes allied and professional members – engage in regular, ongoing continuing education, acquiring 0.6 CEUs every two years. The New England chapter has created CEU-DEU courses to respond to this challenge. (A CEU is a continuing education unit; a DEU is a drinking & eating unit.) Below are details on some of the upcoming CEU-DEU events. Remember to always check the New England web site (www.asidne.org) to verify locations and times. Fees are typically $20 for members, $25 for non-members and $10 for students, with the exception of the April 2nd REGREEN event. *ALL EVENTS ARE WORTH 0.2 CEU'S UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE!*

*March 27, Kohler Water Conservation, Spritzo/The Portland Group, Providence, RI,
5:30 PM*

Whether you are specifying plumbing products that meet the criteria of LEED initiatives, reducing facility operating costs or accommodating the preferences of home owners, environmentally conscious fixtures and faucets can help you address the challenging demands of your customers.
This course will cover general water conservation, LEED standards and how to specify water-saving plumbing solutions that contribute to the big picture. *Worth .1 CEU.* *Please RSVP to Nina Hayes at asidboston@aol.com by March 20th.*

*April 2, REGREEN: Sustainable Residential Remodeling Guidelines, World Trade Center, 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM (part of the BSA’s Residential Design & Construction Show.)*
Sponsored by ASID and the US Green Building Council, Penny Bonda, FASID, LEED AP will present REGREEN, a residential remodeling program based upon sustainable design and construction principles. The three major components include best practice guidelines for use by residential design and construction professionals, learning programs to support the use of the guidelines and accelerate the adoption of green practices, and print and electronic resources for professionals and consumers. Projects and case studies will be included to illustrate the concepts. *Worth .1 CEU*. *Please RSVP directly to Boston Society of Architects.*

*April 22, Kitchen & Bath Lighting, Yale Showroom, Boston, MA, 5:00 PM.*
Renowned author and lighting designer Randall Whitehead is the leading personality in the U.S. today in the field of residential lighting. The author of seven books on lighting design, including /Residential Lighting, a Practical Guide/, Randall’s seminar is a not-to-be-missed event this spring. Kitchens have become the new gathering place for entertaining, while bathrooms have moved into the realm of private retreats. As the roles of these areas change, so do the lighting requirements. These are the areas that clients are most willing to spend money on. Once they are hooked you can lead them into the rest of the house. Participants will be taken on a roller coaster ride of fantastic and flawed installations. This is a great opportunity to find out what the latest trends are in the industry and to see how designers from all over the world handle these essential spaces. *Worth .2 CEU's.* *No charge for this event.*

*May 8, CEU, Audio-Video Experience, Hampton Falls, NH, 4:00 PM*
“Green” is one of the hottest topics today for both the professional design community and the general public. Interior designers are expected to provide accurate, insightful recommendations about this vast subject, whether they are working with a homeowner on a small renovation project or specifying the interiors of a LEED building. Give yourself a strong foundation by learning about the history of the environmental movement, the benefits of “green building” and the initiatives and influencers that are leading the environmental movement today. This overview, followed up with details and facts about the production processes of materials you purchase or specify every day, will arm you with the information you need to make a positive difference on the environment. Worth 0.2 ceu’s.

*May 13, Are Not Your Job - How To Create Sustainable Work/Life Balance, Harraseeket Inn, Freeport, ME, 8:00 AM * *Designers’ most important “product” is their creativity*. Clients expect innovative and creative solutions to their complex design problems and depend upon their designer to deliver results.

Consequently, it is especially critical that designers maintain a healthy work/life balance that inspires, nurtures and replenishes their creative “well.” Without it, people become over-stressed, depleted, quickly burn out, and produce mediocre results.**** Attendees will learn practical, unusual tools and strategies to answer the question: “How do I get my life in balance?”

Through interactive lecture, small group discussion, worksheets, real-life stories and games, designers will:

Explore the direct correlation between *sustainable design concepts* and work/life balance.

  • Identify & reclaim personal *core values*
  • Test *intuition* as an effective decision-making tool
  • Develop a personal *benchmark* for success
  • Create an action plan based on *vision & intention* rather than “goals”
  • Learn a new approach to a “to-do” list
  • Experience *deep camaraderie* & *networking* through shared challenges & solutions
In this session, participants will discover that *“sustainable design” is not just a trend in the built environment, but a lifestyle that can maximize their greatest talents and personal fulfillment through a renewable and inspired process.*

In this high-energy workshop, Liesbet Trappenburg will help attendees design an action plan to reclaim their work/life balance. You MUST find the time to attend this event! *Worth .2 CEU's. *

*June 24 (tentative) CEU, Burlington, VT (location and time to be determined) Worth .2 CEU's.*

Rosie's Place is Transformed for the Holidays!
Catchlight Painting, IP, Christina Oliver, ASID, Pauline Curtiss, IP united with a common mission; to help beautify Rosie's Place. They collaborated on the re-design by choosing color schemes that would be cheerful and uplifting. They also designed interesting and playful patterns for the accent wall above the play space and on the dome ceiling in the foyer. Without the generous donation of all the paint by our IP member Sherwin Williams the work could not have been completed.

On Saturday, November 11th, over 30 employees from the three companies volunteered their time and skill to transform Rosie's Place by painting the foyer, dining area, and play space. In just one day, all the creative planning was realized!

Rosie's Place was founded in 1974, and since then has helped a multitude of incredible women find their place in the world and overcome enormous obstacles. And five years ago, Jane Lucas, ASID and her firm of Lucas Stefura Interiors designed the interiors of the renovated and expanded Rosie's Place.

Kip Tiernan started Rosie's Place with a vision of a non-judgemental environment that would support all women in need. Resources provided include legal services, healthcare, a dining room which served 74,000 meals in the last year, a grocery program, and help with education and training to be able to become self sufficient and proud individuals. Rosie's Place is able to provide incredible assistance solely from donations, no government funding is accepted.

Colette prefers to receive submissions via postal mail. Overnight mail also is a very good option as it almost guarantees review by the editor. (This is a good hint for submitting projects to any media outlet.)

Make sure that any cover letter accompanying the project says that the submission is in response to a request provided to Michelle Snyder, associate director of public relations, at ASID headquarters. Michelle will let Colette know that she will be receiving submissions directly from ASID members.

Members who are unfamiliar with the types of projects typically covered by the magazine should visit its Web site at www.thisoldhouse.com or purchase a copy at their favorite newsstand. If a member has additional questions, please have them contact Michelle Snyder via e-mail at msnyder@asid.org.
